Sea Lavender

Botanical Name: Limonium perezii
Family: Plumbaginaceae
Origin: Canary Islands
Plant Type: Evergreen perennial

Overview

A tough, long-flowering and genuinely beautiful perennial that is perfectly suited to Adelaide's coastal and dry Mediterranean climate, Limonium perezii is one of the most reliable performers in a sunny, well-drained garden position. Its large, domed clusters of tiny flowers with vivid purple calyces and white centres rise on stiff branching stems well above a rosette of broad, waxy dark green leaves, creating a striking display for months on end from late spring through summer and well into autumn.
Exceptionally tolerant of salt spray, heat, drought, wind and poor soils, Sea Lavender is a go-to plant for frontline coastal gardens across South Australia. The papery blooms also make outstanding cut flowers that retain their colour beautifully when dried, making this both a garden and floral design staple. Virtually maintenance-free once established, it is one of the best-value perennials available for Adelaide's climate.

Key Features

  • Mature Size: 0.6–0.9 m H x 0.5–0.9 m W (low, clump-forming rosette with flower stems rising well above foliage)
  • Growth Rate: Moderate; 15–25 cm per year; can flower within 3 months from seed
  • Foliage: Large, broad, waxy oval to spoon-shaped dark green leaves forming a flat basal rosette; fleshy texture; may develop reddish-autumnal tones in cooler months; evergreen year-round
  • Flowers: Large domed clusters of tiny papery blooms with vivid purple to lavender calyces and white centres; borne on stiff branching stems 30–45 cm above foliage; late spring through summer and into autumn; excellent fresh and dried cut flowers
  • Fragrance: Not fragrant
  • Seasonal Interest: Bold, waxy evergreen rosette foliage year-round with reddish tones in cooler months; prolific purple and white flower clusters from late spring through summer and autumn; dried flower heads add winter interest; fresh new foliage in spring
  • Wildlife Value: Flowers attract bees, butterflies and beneficial insects; long season provides extended pollinator support
  • Tolerance: Exceptional drought tolerance; excellent heat tolerance; excellent wind tolerance; outstanding coastal and salt spray tolerance (frontline suitable); frost hardy once established; tolerates poor, sandy and rocky soils; dislikes waterlogging and heavy shade
  • Planting Density: Tight groundcover/border: 3 plants per m² (60 cm spacing); Standard border: 2 plants per m² (70–80 cm spacing); mass planting: 40–60 cm apart; suitable for large containers (35 cm+)
  • Pet Friendly: Non-toxic to cats and dogs

Where It Works Best

  • Sunlight: Full sun; tolerates very light part shade in hotter inland Adelaide positions; best flowering and most compact habit in full sun
  • Soil: Free-draining sandy, loamy or gravelly soils; thrives in poor coastal limestone soils common across SA; tolerates slightly alkaline conditions; excellent in raised beds and rockeries; avoid waterlogged or heavy clay soils
  • Water Needs: Establishment: deep soak 2 times/week for 8–12 weeks; mulch well. Established: very low water needs; deep soak every 2–3 weeks in summer; little to no watering needed in cooler months
  • Maintenance: Deadhead spent flower stems to encourage new buds and extend the flowering season; cut back foliage lightly in late winter to refresh growth; divide clumps every 3–4 years to maintain vigour; a light application of balanced fertiliser in spring is beneficial in poor soils
  • Lifespan: Long-lived perennial; 5–10+ years with good drainage and periodic division
  • Climate Zones: Ideal for all Adelaide zones; Adelaide Plains, foothills, Fleurieu Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula, coastal suburbs and exposed coastal positions across SA
  • Soil pH: Adaptable; slightly acidic to alkaline (pH 6.0–8.5); tolerates Adelaide's limestone soils well

Landscape & Design Ideas

  • Frontline coastal garden staple where outstanding salt spray and wind tolerance make it one of the most reliable flowering perennials available for exposed positions
  • Water-wise and Mediterranean garden border plant delivering months of vivid purple and white flowers through the warmer months with minimal water
  • Rockery and gravel garden feature where the bold flower clusters and waxy foliage rosette create strong textural contrast against stone and gravel
  • Cut flower and dried flower garden; blooms retain colour beautifully when dried and are outstanding in both fresh and dried arrangements
  • Mass planting along sunny verges, nature strips and embankments for low-maintenance season-long colour with strong pollinator appeal

Why You Will Love It

Sea Lavender is one of those plants that just never lets you down. The vivid purple flower clusters are produced for months with almost no effort, the bold waxy foliage looks great all year, and it thrives in exactly the hot, dry, salty and windy conditions that challenge most plants. Whether you are gardening at the coast, on a sunny verge or in a dry Mediterranean border, this is a plant that quietly does everything right.

Dog loves it, but it comes apart pretty quick.
Size: One Size
The dog loved chasing it and playing tug-of-war, but it lasted less than 30 days. If the outer rubber portion of cover was thicker, or all canvas material, it would probably last for a few months of rough play. May buy again if I can't find something similar to try.

Fun for my puff ball lover
Size: 30 Pcs
The gun is very cheaply made and sometimes shoots when the trigger isn't pulled. But my puff ball loving monster seems to love it and all his new puff balls. He was literally jumping with joy.

What a great cat toy!
Size: 100 Pcs
So I bought two of these. One for me and the house cat and one for my niece and her garage/indoor cat. My cat is nearing her 16th year in the world and loves attacking these balls…when she is in the mood and not sleepy. They are great to throw at her, as she will bat at them or catch and bite them. They are super light weight and will not hurt the cat even when triggered by the gun. The gun will launch the ball a good yard or so, but it’s much more interesting if you angle it up and towards the cat as they will watch and attack as it falls. I have tried endlessly to make a video but she stops every time I hit record. It’s not just with this toy but with anything I try and catch her doing…hit record and she is suddenly on her best behavior or walks away. :/ I recommend this product for bored household cats and I think even the young ones would have more fun with it. I should mention that the gun noise might be a bit jarring to cats, but if you put a small hair tie (like the small clear ties) around the back pull- piece (this is the piece you pull back to cock the gun and put a soft ball in the chamber) it mutes the sound of the gun being fired. Overall, the cat and I are happy with this product.
